KNO 12 June 1944, five days after joining the 368th Fighter Squadron, 359th Fighter Group, Major Wayne W. Brown of Neillsvile, WI, and a veteran of Panama, was buried in the Cambridge American Cemetery. On a non-operational flight this morning, June 17, 1944, Major Wayne W. Brown, squadron Operations Officer, was killed when his plane dived into the ground south of Debden. Lt. Col. Tyrrell took off to fire in the guns on a new ship, and was accompanied by Major Brown and Capt. Smith, assistant Operations Officer. After firing his guns Lt. Col. Tyrrell decided to test the ship further by going to altitude. Capt. Smith decided to return to the base, so just the two of them went up. Several acrobatic maneuvers were performed above 30,000 ft. Then Lt. Col. Tyrrell dived his ship through an overcast down to about 20,000 ft. and became separated from Maj. Brown in the overcast. He looked around for him in the vicinity and climbed back up, thinking he might not have come down. He was unable to raise Maj. Brown on the R/T, so he came back to base alone. Approximately two hours later a call came through informing us of Maj. Brown’s accident. ~ Excerpt from the 368th Fighter Squadron History.
