Staff Sergeant O'Brien was credited with shooting down a German ME 262 jet fighter in April of 1945. He was discharged Oct 12, 1945, and on his second day back home, he was injured when he was driving and side-swiped a car and then hit a pole. He died fifteen days later from a fractured skull received in the crash.
