The plaque attached to replica nose art panel at Norfolk and Suffolk Aviation Museum The Street, Flixton, Bungay NR35 NR35 1NZ UK 03/06/2018

The plaque reads as follows:

"This is a replica of the nose art painted on B-17 Flying Fortress 42-102636 by the original artist, Annie Gordon, during a television documentary made of the excavation and recovery of the wreckage.

"SleepyTime Gal" was the aircraft normally flown by Capt. John J Hutchinson Jr and his crew who, tragically died on 21 February 1944 after their replacement aircraft was in collision with another B-17G aircraft returning home to Great Ashfield Air Base in Norfolk after a successful bombing raid over Germany.

A former Red Cross worker on Great Ashfield Air Base, Annie was a prolific painter of B-17 nose art. Annie painted this replica in their memory for the Channel 4 Time Team production "Bombers in Reedham Marshes" which was transmitted on 21 February 1999, the 55th Anniversary of the crash. Numerous items recovered from the crash site are with the museum for display."

See UPL 13298 for image of item that plaque is attached.

In my opinion this information cannot be correct. Capt John N. Hutchison Jr. collision and death was indeed 21 February 1944. Aircraft 42-102636 by all accounts did not enter service until 20 March 1944 and could not possibly be the aircraft normally flown by Hutchinson prior to the collision on aircraft 42-31370. It is my opinion that aircraft 42-31370 did not receive any nose art and thus was unnamed. I believe the television production was misinformed. William Henry 03/07/2018
