* Damage was caused by the exploding PBY-1 Bu #32271 former B-24J 42-110007 an Anvil** project, remote controlled explosive packed drone enroute to V3 long range cannon battery at Mimoyecques, France. The premature explosion of the drone killed its command crew Lt Joseph P Kennedy Jr*** and Lt Wilford J 'Bud' Willey and also caused damage to the navigation B-17 42-3518. As the mission was "Top Secret" no mention would have been made in the press release, explaining the "Flak" hit !!.

** Anvil [USN code name] was the equivalent of Aphrodite [USAAF code name] projects to take war weary bombers packed with 2,000lb+ of explosives and remote control them by radio control and TV cameras with the operator in a nearby 'Mother' ship and deliberatley crash it into the target. The command crew were required to take off, maintain level flight and arm the 'bomb' as they baled out over the UK.

*** Elder brother to future US president John F Kennedy.
