John "Jack" Leonard Ryan getting the Distinguished Flying Cross in 1943 after a mission over Germany. Jack's B-17 bomber was hit repeatedly by shrapnel and the cockpit was aflame. Jack turn the controls over to his co-pilot and put the flames out by hand. He resumed control of the aircraft in successfully landed back at their airdrome at Thurleigh, north of London. The officer doing the honors is General Ira C. Eaker.
