Conroy from the 566th BS, 389th BG was the pilot of a B-24D 42-40738 "The Oklahoman" on the Aug 1st 43 low-level mission to bomb the oil refineries at Ploesti, Romania. He was forced to divert to Malta due to low fuel and damage.
