B-24D Liberator - # 42-40738 - 'The Oklahoman' shown with pilot, John C. "Jack" Martin from Tishomingo, Oklahoma, who named, 'THE OKLAHOMAN'. The aircraft was lost - shot down over St. Nazaire, France, by a direct burst of flak. Flying 'THE OKLAHOMAN' on that day, was Lt. Mason and his crew, who normally flew in the B-24D, 'FIGHTIN' SAM' - #42-40506. Lt. Mason was the sole survivor of the loss, and was taken prisoner. POW. Dec 5,1943. - Copilot Lt. Eldon N. Colby was flying next to 'THE OKLAHOMAN' on his first mission as a pilot, in the B-24D, 'TOUCH OF TEXAS' - #42-40751. Pieces of the exploding B-24, 'THE OKLAHOMAN' hit his and several other aircraft.
