Colonel Hubert Zemke (commander of the 479th Fighter Group) has handwritten on the reverse: 'Nancy/ Essey attack on 18 Aug 1944 by two Squadrons of the 479th Fighter Group. 2nd Lt Caliv J Murphy just what Murphy is aiming at is a bit difficult to determine. This is welll after the initial aircraft had been set on fire. Murphy claimed 1-0-0 FW 190, 0-0-1 Ju 88. When the black smoke became so thick and dense- I finally pulled the P-38s off. Not bad total e/a destroyed 43-0-28.'
