A 487th Bomb Group B-17 Flying Fortress flipped onto its back and sent out of control by the damage caused to the tail section by flak shells. It was part of a formation of 487th Bomb Group aircraft on their way to raid Mersberg oil plant on the 2nd of November 1944. Printed caption on reverse: '55102 USAF - B-17 Flying Fortress of the 8th Air Force over on its back out of control following damage to the tail by flak. Other Fortresses continue on to bomb Mersberg, Germany's synthetic oil plant, 2 November 1944.' On reverse: US Air Force 1361st Photographic Squadron AAVS (MAC) and Substandard Original Material [Stamps].
