IMAGEA P-47 Thunderbolt of the 56th Fighter Group scores a direct hit on a Messerschmitt Bf 109, 12 May 1944. Gun camera image. Handwritten caption on reverse: 'Picture #2 - 12 May 1944. Less than three separate, [wild?] engagements. This Me 109 was caught assembling with a formation of Luftwaffe Fighter aircraft at 28000 feet between Frankfurt and Wiesbaden. He'd just turned into a climbing left turn. With a couple of [wing's?] lead at 250 to 300 yards - he was allowed to fly thru 5 seconds of fire from eight machine guns (50 calibre).'
