Evaded (EVD) Shot down by flak and crashed near Leumer on 7/7/44 in B-17 42-31189. Retired as LtCol. Wrote the following (summarized) 7 July 1944 forced down to Leipzig, 'The flak was heavy. . . we tried to return to base. . . over Holland and the Zuider Zee a third engine went out and we lost altitude. Ordered to bail out. We came upon some workers who told us to hide until they could come get them. We were taken to a workers camp and given civilian clothes and hid the next day because there were about 200 Germans looking for themÉ. we traveled by train. . . crossed the border 11 Aug 1944 and spent the next day in a haystack. . . we volunteered for the 'white Army'
