MilitaryEnlisted in 1941. Did Basic Training at Camp Edwards, MA in 1942. Transferred to Army Transport Service. Duty included convoys in the N. Atlantic, Africa, and the Suez & Libyan Campaign. Transferred to the 8th A. F. , 388th BG based in Knettishall, England. In 1943, I was a Radio Operator / Gunner on B-17s. Shot down 12 May 1944 over Frankfurt, Germany in B-17 #42-31549 'Jeannie'. Captured immediately, and spent 13 months prisoner at Stalag Luft Ill, in Poland.
