A 66th Sqdn Flight Engineer Murphy recalled the raids on St Nazaire and Ploesti when the Group suffered such heavy losses. Having completed his tour he returned to the USA in September and applied for pilot training.
He went on to fly fighters in the Korean War and reached the rank of Colonel before leaving the Air Force in 1973 and going on to work for Northrop for several more years.
