William Haylock
MilitarySon Paul Haylock
William (Bill) Haylock trained on Course 27A at Falcon Field starting on 26 June 1945 and ending on 10 September 1945.
Bill was born in 1925 in the small Suffolk village of Holywell Row. The village backed onto RAF Mildenhall which was opened in 1934. In the same year it was to host the Mildenhall to Melbourne Air Race. Bill would have been nine years old at the time and maybe it was this exciting event that kindled a desire to fly.
Bill left school at fourteen and worked on his Uncle’s farm until he was old enough to enlist, which he did just before his eighteenth birthday in July 1943. Although the war ended while he was training in Arizona he stayed in the RAF until 1948 and got his wings at RAF Feltwell in Suffolk.
After the air force he married Pam in 1949 and returned to Holywell Row to establish a new farm growing Asparagus. Bill and Pam were married for sixty-two years and had two children, Paul and Claire.
