William Edward Treichler
MilitaryNewspaper clipping
Assigned to 345BS, 98BG, 9AF USAAF. 23 x combat missions. Sole survivor Radio Operator of B-24 41-24246 'Semper Felix' exploded having released its bombs over target as a result of ground fire on 1st Aug 43 Ploesti oil refinery raid. Prisoner of War (POW). MACR 225.
Later T/Sgt Treichler recollected: I heard the pilot say "I can't see anything" and the Bombardier calls "steady" gave corrections then "bombs away". The pilot took us down on deck and I saw Politte hit by ground fire double up. Flames flew up at me from the bomb bay tank. Fire hitting upfront pitched us violently, then we exploded. I woke up a few days later in a Romanian hospital.
Awards: DFC, AM, PH, POW, WWII Victory, EAME.
