William Charles Yaeger

Military

He registered for the WW II draft on 16 February 1942 and he was listed as unemployed. He was 5' 11" tall; weighed 168 pounds; had brown hair, blue eyes and a 'light' complexion; it was noted: "Scar across top head". (The registration card seems to confirm his 'Draftsman' occupation on the Census Record.)

We are unable to find any record of his enlisted service in the NARA data base.

Lieutenant Yeager is listed on the 437th TCG Special Orders #195, dated 27 December 1943; these were the orders generated at Pope Field (Fort Bragg, NC) for the first phase of movement by air and by rail of the 437th personnel to their eventual overseas deployment; he was listed as part of the air echelon.

We have him listed as a 1st Lieutenant, participating as a C-47 Pilot or Co-Pilot on six 437th flights: the movement overseas from Baer Field, Indiana to England via the southern route in January 1944; Mission ALBANY on 06 June 1944; Mission Galveston on 07 June 1944; the re-supply and air evacuation Mission #7 in June of 1944; the Dragoon Movement in July of 1944; and the re-supply and air evacuation Mission #49 in August of 1944.

Although we don't have a copy of the orders, he was killed on 17 September 1944 during the MARKET mission in Holland; the event was recorded on MACR #9906 (a copy of which we have not been unable to obtain). There is a detailed description of the event, with eyewitness accounts, in 'MARKET Flights, Volume 10, by Hans den Brok.
