Thomas was assigned as a Navigator with the 453rd Bomb Group at Old Buckenham, England. In his unit were actors Jimmy Stewart and Walter Matthau. He flew his first mission on September 26 1944, his 35th on March 3 1945 returning to the USA aboard the Liberty ship 'Willy Weigle', a hospital ship full of wounded. 'Halfway across the Atlantic we heard that President Roosevelt had died'. He afterwards attended Drake University Law School and worked as an attorney with Employers Mutual Insurance Co for some 40 years.
