Military ROLL OF HONOUR"Iowans of the Mighty Eighth", Chapter 19 "Killed in Action", by Charles D Taylor
July 24, 1944, F/O Stewart L. Wilcox, Co-Pilot and his 613Sq. 1st.Lt. Coleman Crew flew the 401st BG Mission to St. Lo FR. On their return flight their B-17 a/c 'IN-M', ser. 42-32005 caught-fire, and although reports of the cause varied, all 9-Crewmen successfully bailed-out over the English Channel. Squadron-mate Lt. Wm. C. Mannix brought his a/c low over the water and released his dinghy, resulting in 8-Coleman Crewmen boarding were rescued within 2-hours. However, co-pilot, F/O Stewart L. Wilcox, was never found. He is memorialized at the Cambridge American Cemetery, in their 'Wall of the Missing', Cambridgeshire UK.
The day prior, his Brother, Lt. Blaine B. Wilcox, Bombardier, arrived in his new 2nd.Lt. A.J. Nelson 'Replacement Crew', and Stewart and Blaine sat-up all night talking together.
