Staver flew on 35 combat missions with the Group; that of November 21 1944 over Merseburg his most hazardous. They were attacked by large numbers of German fighters and only 3 planes in the Squadron - of 13- made it back to base. His navigator was wounded, they lost two engines and he just managed to make an emergency landing on an RAF airstrip in Belgium.
DFC; Air Medal with 6 clusters.
