He entered the service in October 1942 and was eventually deployed overseas to the 303rdBG at Molesworth. He was on his 4th mission when his B-17 #42-32027 'Betty Jane' dropped out of formation due to flak over the target area of Mersberg, GR on 13 Sep 1944 and crashed. Prisoner of War (POW). All his crew had survived apart from the pilot whose parachute had failed to open. He was held at Stalag Luft 1 until liberated in May '45.
He returned to work at Iowa State University, became a staff member and retired in 1986 as an Associate Professor.
