Enlisted Army Air Corps August 1942; commissioned a Second Lt. and Navigator March 18, 1944; arrived England May 1944.
His B-17 shot down and Ross killed in action (KIA) while on his 30th mission 2 January 1945 in AC #43-38921.
Air Medal awarded July 30, 1944: "For meritorious achievement while participating in heavy bombardment missions in the air offensive against the enemy over Continental Europe".
Subsequently awarded 4 Oak Leaf Clusters with the Air Medal.
Distinguished Flying Cross (awarded posthumously): "For extraordinary achievement while serving as lead navigator of wing and squadrons formations on heavy bombardment missions against the enemy. Lieutenant Cullen guided his formations directly to the assigned targets in devastating attacks against Deelan, Holland, 17 September 1944; Berlin Germany, 6 October 1944 and Luneback, Germany, 29 December 1944 despite adverse weather conditions and anti-aircraft fire on each mission. The initiative, determination and skill displayed by Lieutenant Cullen on these occasions reflect the highest credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States".
Purple Heart (awarded posthumously): "For his supreme sacrifice in the European Area on 2 January 1945".
