MilitaryShot down by fighters 16 August 1943. Attack was on Foggia airfields under TDY to the 9th AAF in #42-41021 'Black Sheep'. After capture following a crash landing, captured by Italian soldiers and turned over to the Germans. Imprisoned at Sulmona, Italy. After about 2 months, he escaped with others and spent a month behind enemy lines. With crew mate John Hess, they met outside of Foggia with the Canadian 5th Army. He was returned to service.
