Robert Louis Schmidt

Military ROLL OF HONOUR

Originally a waist gunner with the 390th Bomb Group in the 570th Bomb Squadron, he flew as a replacement tail gunner when Al Ball came down with strep throat. His B-17G exploded when it took a direct flak hit in an open bomb bay door within a half of second dropping bombs at a small arms and tank factory over Düsseldorf, Germany, causing a chain of reaction of planes to explode killing six crews and a lost of nine aircraft. His B-17, "Bundles of Trouble" crashed in Hubbelrath, Germany. The crew were brought to the NordFriedhof Cemetery in Düsseldorf on September 9th and buried on September 11th by a cemetery grave digger, Johannas Correck, until the bodies were discovered in April 1946.
