From a personal account:
My plane got damaged on a mission to the Bastogne area. I got back to our lines and landed it but it took 3 days to repair its engine.
I was listed as Missing in Action (MIA) until I got back to base. I brought 11 bottles of champagne back with me. I lost 13 pounds during that time.
I got an award for saving the plane and Presidential Citation from Roosevelt.
