He enlisted in May 1942 and trained as a medic joining the 80th Medical Unit in Tucson AZ. They joined the 486thBG at Sudbury - amongst his tasks was meeting the inbound aircraft with casualties on board. He returned to the USA in August 1945 and afterwards owned and operated a general store in Finchford Iowa for 32 years.
