Robert Earl McGee
MilitaryJoined Sqd 8/17/44. Pilot: Dayball.
One of McGee's missions with the 68th Sqdn at Shipdham was in support of the men carrying out the airborne drop at Arnhem; the bomb racks carrying supplies instead of bombs. McGee - a gunner- was then shipped to Italy, part of a group of 500 spare crew members, and attached to 78th sqdn 465thBG near Naples. From there on a raid over the Ploesti oil fields their B-24 was involved in a collision when a plane in the lead formation literally landed on top of them. McGee in the nose turret had a narrow escape. With damaged propellers and a holed fuselage they first of all headed for Russia but eventually did make it back to base, having carried out emergency repairs en route.
McGee returned to the USA in June 1945 and was posted to Fort Myers to check out on the B-29. He was spared going to the Pacific theater of war when the Japanese surrendered that August and was discharged 31st October 1945.
Awards: SS, BS (2OLC), AM, PH, WWII Victory, EAME.
