Boice was working at the Douglas Aircraft Co. when he was drafted in March 1943. He attended radio and gunnery schools and after being crewed up flew a brand new B-17 from Nebraska to Wales. They were assigned to the 91stBG at Bassingbourn where he flew on 35 combat missions on 'Red Alert' and 'Dear Becky'. His most memorable mission was when they were attacked by some 30 ME -109's at the beginning of a bomb run and saw seven of their squadron go down. 'We had 139 holes in our plane, lost an engine and the pilot was wounded'.

He returned to the USA in November 1944 and was then sent to the Far East where he was part of the crew hauling gasoline in a B-24 over the 'Hump' between China and India. He flew on 90 such trips.

In 1947 he joined the Bell Telephone Co. retiring after 30 years.

He was awarded the DFC and Air Medal with 3 Oak clusters.
