Military"Iowans of the Mighty Eighth", Chapter 26 "Biographies", by Charles D Taylor.
Dick was farming with his father until he enlisted. He trained as a gunner, was assigned to a crew and boarded the 'Queen Mary' for the 7 day Atlantic crossing 'bunks stacked five high'. Joining the Group at Shipham he flew on 33 combat missions ; his most memorable a low level supply mission when the planes either side of them went down. After the war he returned to farming and played semi-pro baseball and AAU basketball. He also served on the Board of Framers' Co-op, the local school board and on his bank Board of Directors. In 1996 he returned to to France for the dedication of a memorial to the 44th.
