Redline the Labrador mix
MascotIWM, Roger Freeman Collection
Redline was given to Albert Tucker, personnel sergeant of the 401st Bomb Squadron by a woman near Walla Walla in 1942, he was named Redline because he didn't get paid. Redline was smuggled in a bag with Tucker to the groups training locations, and on board the Queen Mary, the bag was marked up as containing 'squadron records'.
On arrival at Bassingbourn, Redline was officially enlisted into the 401st Bomb Squadron and assigned the rank of Private First Class. He would go on to be promoted to Sergeant, but allegedly earned his fair share of demotions for peeing in Stanley Wray's office. Redline apparently took as much of a dislike to English vegetables as his colleagues and was once spotted cocking his leg up a bag of brussell sprouts
Tucker and Douglas Gibson, were primarily responsible for Redline, but he became a firm friend of the whole unit. Redline regularly participated in training flights, and had his own oxygen mask and flying suit. He completed 5 combat missions.
Redline was dog-knapped twice during his service. The first time he was believed to have been carried off by personnel from a visiting unit after Bob Hope performed at Bassingbourn. The 78th Fighter Group were suspected as the culprits and a B-17 Flying Fortress dropped a full bomb load of horse manure on Duxford in retaliation, he was located after a week of detective work. The second dog-knapping occured at the end of the war in 1945 as the 91st were moving out of Bassingbourn. Plans were made for Redline to return to the US, but he disappeared a week before departure. Forced to leave his friend behind, Tucker always hoped that Redline eventually made it back home to the US.
