21 June 1943 While serving with the 385th Bomb Group, his B-17, tail # 42-30254, TSG Atkins disappeared over the Atlantic, between Gander Bay, Newfoundland, and Prestwick, Scotland. No sign of the crew or aircraft was ever found.
