Otha B Huckaby
MilitaryOtha B Huckaby "Huck" Master Sergeant USAF Ret., age 85, beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed away on June 16, 2005. Huck was a resident of Austin, Texas for over 40 years. He was born December 14, 1919, to Berry and Sarah Huckaby of Anniston, Alabama. The family later moved to Eastover, South Carolina.
In 1941, Sgt. Huckaby enlisted in the United States Air Force and served in World War II and the Korean War. He was a radio operator and gunner on a B-26 Bomber in World War II. His plane was shot down over France and Sgt. Huckaby became a German Prisoner of War in Stalag Luft 4 and 6. He received many medals, citations and The Purple Heart in the service of his country.
On November 25, 1945, he married Mildred Henderson of Tampa, Florida. To this union two sons were born.
After his retirement from the Air Force, Mr. Huckaby moved to Austin and worked for several business machine companies in the area. Mr. Huckaby was of the Methodist faith and a member of Capitol City Chapter of Ex-POWs and DAY Post 173.
Mr. Huckaby was preceded in death by his son Dan, his parents, one brother and two sisters.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mildred, son, Mike Huckaby and wife Pam, grandchildren Heath, Clay and Mandy Huckaby of Buda, Texas, several nieces, nephews, many good friends, and the world's best neighbors.
He loved the outdoors, fishing and gardening. We will remember him for his love of talking, storytelling, humor and pride in his family. Huck never met a stranger.
