He entered the service on 13 April 1943 from Boston, Massachusetts. He enlisted as a private; he had four years of high school education, was single, without dependents and his civilian occupation was listed as: "Foundry occupations, n.e.c.".

Ray was a member of the 437th TCG Association and was listed on their rosters from 1972 to 1978; he attended the Association Reunions in 1974 and 1976.

According to the Veterans Affairs BIRLS* Death File, he was released from Active duty on 24 September 1945.
