He registered for the WW II draft on 01 July 1941, and he was listed as employed by Carl Foerster & Son, in St. Louis, Missouri as a sheet metal worker. He was 6' tall; weighed 165 pounds; had blonde hair, blue eyes and a 'light complexion'.

On 24 March1942 he enlisted in the service from St. Louis, Missouri, as a private in the Air Corps. He had four years of high school education, was single, without dependents and his civilian occupation was listed as: "Tinsmiths, coppersmiths, and sheet metal workers".

Norm was a member of the 437th TCG Association and was listed on their rosters from 1972 through 2007; he attended many re-unions over the years.
