He entered the service on 12 July 1942 from Camp Livingston, Louisiana. He enlisted as a Private; he had two years of high school education, was single, without dependents and his civilian occupation was listed as: "Semiskilled chauffeurs and drivers, bus, taxi, truck, and tractor".

He was listed as a 1945 member of the 84th TCS in Frank Guild's book: 'A Journey to the Far Shore'.

We have Sergeant Sale listed on the 437th TCG Special Orders #195, dated 27 December 1943, which contained 33 pages of names. These were the orders generated at Pope Field (Fort Bragg, NC) for the first phase of movement by air and by rail of the 437th personnel to their eventual overseas deployment.

He is also listed on the Dragoon movement orders in July 1944 as a passenger.

We appear to have some consistency issues with Leonard's last name – 'Sales' vs. 'Sale'. In the enlistment record, the orders we have, and the 1947 City Directory entry, he is unmistakably listed as 'Sales'; in the 1930 census, the handwritten entry has been interpreted as 'Sales', but could conceivably be 'Sale'. In some of the pre and post 1947 city directories he is listed as 'Sale' and his obituary lists him as 'Sale'. In the index to the compendium "Fighting Men of Louisiana", he is listed as: "Sale, Leonard C., MSgt., USA, p. 16" . In accordance with the family's wishes, we are using 'Sale' consistently throughout.
