Kingdon Roger Knapp

Military

Knapp took over as senior OSS JE project Mosquito pilot from Lt. Robert Walker who rotated to CONUS. When 8th AF forced transfer of the project to Harrington, Knapp continued flying most of the successful missions.

Postwar, Knapp was recalled to duty for the Korean War and flew A-26 Invader aircraft with the 8th Bombardment Squadron (L), 3 Bomb Wing, Kunsan (K-8), Korea. On 7 June 1951, he and two crew members took off on a night mission to interdict an enemy highway in North Korean territory. The aircraft never returned and all crew members are listed as Killed In Action.

See: Norman Malayney, "The 25th Bomb Group (Rcn) in WWII", on pages 284-285 are listed OSS JE Mosquito missions. Using--one mission is one takeoff/landing--find me nine missions in a seven-day period by the same crew. The highest I can find is six in a seven-day period in late March-early April.

According to OSS JE Log at Nara, Knapp and OSS JE personnel, became involved in a "hostile feud" with 492nd BG at Harrington over competency in maintaining OSS Mosquito/A-26 aircraft and flight operations.

The final 25th BG Rcn JE mission was flown from Harrington on 27/28 April 1945. How is "mission" defined--one sortie (takeoff and landing)? Or, one sortie having three missions to three agents? According RG226, depending on the OSS section involved, some counted one sortie to three agents as three missions. And other departments counted one sortie as one mission, regardless of number of agents involved.
