He was taking Civilian Flight Training at Iowa State when he enlisted in May 1942 but was not called to active duty until the following February and - after training - was commissioned in January 1944. He and his crew were shipped to England that September to join the group at Hethel where they flew multiple missions, often lucky to get back to base at all and often on three engines. His final mission was March 9 1945, he returned to the USA on VE Day and got married two weeks later. He was afterwards a structural engineer.
