Military"Iowans of the Mighty Eighth", Chapter 22 "Biographies", by Charles D Taylor.
After training as a gunner and being crewed up he crossed the Atlantic in a brand new B-24 to join the Group at Old Buckenham and fly on 28 combat missions. On their second - that of 12 October 1944 - while on the bomb run, a flight of B-17's went straight through them. One tore three feet off the wing of their plane 'the pilot never lost control of the plane and we made it back to England'. He was discharged in July 1945 then worked for Northwestern Bell Telephone as a data tester until his retirement in 1986.
