11 January 1945, James F. Wilson and crew, including tail gunner John R. Hebert, flew a bombing mission over Hamburg. Targets were German submarine bases. Anti-aircraft shell made a direct hit on plane; shell entered plane missing radio operator, T. Grover Hayes, by inches. Missile exited, and then exploded. T. Grover Hayes' flight log documents action. This can be seen at http://usarmyairforces.blogspot.com/2012/09/thomas-grover-hayes-0106192…. Flight log documents 35 missions.
