John was called to active duty in January 1943 and entered the Aviation Cadet program at Santa Anna. After training he joined the 94th BG at Bury St Edmunds and flew 35 missions as co-pilot. On that of October 7 1944 his squadron were attacked by an estimated 40 to 50 German fighters coming in from behind. Nine of the twelve aircraft in the Squadron were shot down, one crash landed in Belgium; John's B-17 and only one other made it back to base. Back to the States in April 1945 he ferried P-51s and P-47's as needed until his discharge six months later. He went back to finish his Law Degree and entered the family law practice.
