John enlisted in December 1943 and attended Aerial Gunnery school in Las Vegas before joining up with a crew and shipping to the 94th BG in Suffolk, England. He flew 12 missions as a substitute togglier - one to bomb the submarine pens at Kiel. After VE Day he was first sent to Germany to guard captured SS troops and then worked in the Ops office until January 1946 and his discharge.

A bomber crew of the 94th Bomb Group stand with their B-17 Flying Fortress (serial number 42-30200) nicknamed "Slo Time Sally" and a bomb inscribed 'Special delivery to Hitler'. Inscription on bomb reads: 'Special delivery to Hitler, From Peggy of St. Louis.'
