The plane was TDY to the 9th AAF for the planned raid on Ploesti. It was on a mission to boy the Messina RR Station, Italy. After bombing the target they were hit by flak and lost #4 engine . Lt. Thompson bailed out along with 2 others and drowned. Only his body was recovered. The plane was able to land in Malta, the rest of the crew returned to base.
