James Lowell Apple
MilitaryHe registered for the WW II draft on 16 October 1940; he was listed as living in Dayton and was employed by the Dayton Power and Light Co. He was 6' 1 1/2" tall and weighed 185 pounds. He had brown hair, brown eyes and a 'ruddy' complexion.
He entered the service on 25 January 1942 from Fort Thomas, Newport, Kentucky. He enlisted as a private (S/N#: 15089239); he had two years of college education, was Single, without dependents and his civilian occupation was listed as: "Power station operators".
We have Lieutenant Apple listed on the 437th TCG Special Orders #195, dated 27 December 1943. These were the orders generated at Pope Field (Fort Bragg, NC) for the first phase of movement by air and by rail of the 437th personnel to their eventual overseas deployment.
He was the 86th TCS Officer that was ordered to remain at Pope Field with a small contingent of enlisted personnel to ensure that all the Squadron administrative tasks of 'clearing the post' were taken care of ; my guess would be that he was part of the Squadron's Adjutant's organization.
They were to complete their efforts and be enroute to join the rest of the group (at Camp Shanks, New York), traveling by Military Aircraft (M/A) or rail, 'on or about' (o/a) 2 January 1944.
