16 August 1943 shot down by fighters. Attack on Foggia airfields under TDY to the 9th AAF. Killed in Action (KIA) in #42-41021 'Black Sheep'. He became a Prisoner of War (POW) at a German camp in Sulmona, Italy. He escaped about 2 months later. He was returned to service.
