Irvin Leon Sumpter
MilitaryIrvin Sumpter was a Tail Gunner in the 92nd Bomb Group / 407th Bomb Squadron. Shot down 22 December 1943 on board B-17 # 42-3184. He landed in parachute near Wierden, The Netherlands and was immediately helped by Dutch citizens who provided him food and shelter. Helped across the Dutch-Belgian border, he was hidden in various safehouses by Belgian patriots and taken in charge by the Belgian Comet evasion network. Having been guided to Brussels, he, like many other evaders, was arrested by the Gestapo with the help of a Belgian traitor who had organized a false evasion line. Interned in the Saint-Gilles prison in Brussels during about four months, he was deported by train to Germany and was interned in Stalag Luft 4 in Poland until his liberation in late Spring 1945. Prisoner of War (POW). See the story of his evasion at http://www.evasioncomete.be/fsumpteil.html
