Homer C Nyberg

Military ROLL OF HONOUR

Born in ca 1921 in Clay Center, Clay County, KS. Father: William Nyberg and mother: Emily. Graduated from Clay Center High School in 1940. Attended one year of college. Enlisted in US Army Air Force at Jefferson Barracks, MO. on 15 July 1942. Single, no dependents, height: 68 inches, weight: 124. Arrived at Thurleigh Field as part of Carmon J Nickols' crew on 9 Dec 1944. Volunteered to fly first mission as gunner on another AC for the mission flown on 29 Dec 1944. Also his pilot Lt Carmon J Nickols was flying his first mission as co-pilot on this mission on AC#43-39031. Nickols was also killed on this mission. AC took direct flak hit in bomb bay while doors were open just after bombs away. Fire in center of AC and it took other hits. Went down in spiral to crash about 8 miles from target. All crew bailed out. Killed in Action (KIA) at Bingen in B-17 #4339031. Nine member crew on this mission. 5 survived to go to German POW camp, and 4 were KIA. Nyberg buried at American Cemetery at Lorraine, France. He is located in plot: Tablet of the Missing. Listed on Find-a-grave.
