Herman Martin Gurgel was born on March 20, 1917 in Burlington, WI, USA to Herman E & Flora M. (Pohll) Gurgel. He grew up in Wonewoc, WI, one of seven children in the family.

His youngest sister, Doris L. (Gurgel) Picha said he always dreamed of flying.

He married Bettie Munro(e) in Cut Banks, MT on April 12, 1943.

Shot down 28 July 1943 in B-17 #4230179 'Grim Reaper' Killed in Action (KIA).
