Military398th Bomb Group Collection via Nuthampstead Airfield Museum. Museum object reference number: USB1-117
Hit by flak during bombing run. Heavy flak hit three engines. As soon as we reached the French coast we lost all the oil on three engins. We threw out every bit of equipment we could to lighten the weight and headed for England. Landed in an infested mine area with only 200 feet to spare on the last turn and made a perfect anding, missing the mine sticks. They found themselves at the club house on one of England's best golf clubs. They all walked away.
