Guido D. Gianacovo. an Alexandria Army Air Field graduate, awarded the Silver Star in Italy. Stormy weather made his formation turn back e-nroute to a mission over Austria while enemy anti-aircraft fire silenced two engines and damaged the tail section. Although his ship was in grave danger of fire, he flew the Fort within 50 miles of friendly territory when a third ceased functioning. Despite the crippled condition of his plane, the 26-year old pilot effected a successful landing in rough seas. In spite of his extreme exhaustion, he pulled a life raft from the sinking plane and pulled himself and two survivors aboard the raft.
