Shot down 3 November 1943 in B-17 #42-37742. Plane crashed into North Sea. Killed in Action (KIA).
Lt. Winchester was a navigator aboard a B-17 on a bombing mission to Wilhemshaven, Germany, at the time he was reported missing. The flight was attacked by enemy aircraft and disappeared into a cloud over the North Sea.
Grey Winchester left North Carolina with the National Guard in September 1940 and was stationed at Fort Jackson for some time. In 1942, he was transferred to the Air Corps and received his training at three different training fields in Texas, receiving his wings and commission at Hondo, Tex., in April 1943. He was also given advanced training at Dyersburg, TN, and Grand Island, Nebraska.
He left the States on August 20, 1943 and landed in England around September 5th. He had completed a number of missions over enemy territory before he was killed.
