George Wilson Freas DVM

Military

My father, 2nd Lieutenant, George W. Freas, service number 0-751117, served as co-pilot with Wesley Huckins, in the 711th. His name is misspelled in this record as "Preas" -- It is "Freas." He completed 14 missions out of Rattlesden Air Field, was shot down on his 15th mission.

I have original documents and photographs of my father with his crew. This crew was shot down on March 16, 1944, en route to their mission to Augsburg, Germany. My father was originally declared dead, but had been found and sheltered by the French Resistance. He was turned in by a double agent. Captured out of uniform, he was treated as a spy and sent to concentration camp. He was eventually sent to a POW camp, Stalag Luft I, in September, 1944. I have his Stalag dog tags and other artifacts. The POW camp was liberated by the Russians.

My father went to college on the GI Bill, became a veterinarian, and practiced in his home town of Franklin, Kentucky, until 1994. He died on September 13, 2010.

I have my father's service records, many photographs, original Army Air Corps documents (citations and other records), and his POW records which he brought home with him. I also have news reports from the Franklin Favorite, his local newspaper, detailing his being shot down, declared dead, and later being found alive. I will upload as much as I can to my profile and add it to his record here.
